Dear Parents Band students, and students taking instrument lessons,

Cold weather is very difficult on instruments. Please remind your child that an instrument should never be left in an unheated room for very long. The cold weather can split brass instruments, crack wood instruments, and damage pads covering holes on instruments. Even when an instrument is correctly cleaned after it is used residual moisture still remains in the instrument. The residual moisture is what causes the damage to the instrument. Residual moisture can freeze and expand causing straight things to bend, metal and wood to split, and pads to become brittle and not fit properly.

Please, Please never leave an instrument in an unheated room for any lenght of time.
